Lorde on Letterman

Watching New Zealand singer Lorde, aka Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor, perform at the Live on Letterman show, I couldn’t help but keep thinking, ‘how is she only 17?’ Sure, she has a jagged edginess to her that comes out in the way she moves her hands and hips on stage but it’s all enveloped by an aura of assurance – far more confident than I ever was at that age, that’s for certain. With all the buzz coming out of her previous performances in New York, and the fact that she signed her first record deal at 13, I shouldn’t have been surprised. Still, it’s hard to believe she only just turned 17 a few days ago.

Dressed in a shiny black jacket and matching skirt with her trademark dark brown curly mane tucked in at the back of her neck, Lorde performed a short set of 5 songs, mostly off her new album, Pure Heroine. Her intro though, was to the opening track of The Love Club EP, Bravado, and she reeled us in with her magnetic stage presence – her maroon-coloured lips enunciating the teen’s thoughts on a life at odds with pop culture’s overblown obsessions.

Time Magazine in its capacity to put a stamp on all things noteworthy, just put Lorde on its list of most influential teens, noting her international fame and standing. Her most high profile fan at this point, New York City’s new Mayor Bill de Blasio walked onto stage with Royals accompanying him, underscoring a victory he won for a campaign based on economic equality. It’s actually kind of reassuring to know that Lorde is so young. It also makes it exciting to see where she’ll go and what songs will come next.
