The Rundown

Entertainment Express: Mariah Carey, Arcade Fire, X-Men, Denzel Washington, Mad Men

Hello, hello – back from Cannes, but still in Europe – in the UK – so that should be ‘ello, ‘ello!

* Mariah Carey‘s long-long-long-awaited new album Me, I am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse is out today. After 18 no. 1 singles on Billboard’s Hot 100, the singer is looking to find her space back on top. Producer extraordinaire Jermaine Dupri, whom she worked with on the album, believes she’ll do it: “She’s not doing what everyone else is doing – she’s doing what made you fall in love with her in the first place.” She does still have those amazing chops. Exhibit A: the track You’re Mine (Eternal).

* X-Men: Days of Future Past is having the Best.Weekend.Ever. The film has gone on to achieve over $300 million internationally, making that the best opening for any X-Men movie. We won’t even mention the Adam Sandler / Drew Barrymore disaster Blended‘s performance…

* Arcade Fire‘s Win Butler has responded to criticism about the music video for the band’s We Exist track, which features Andrew Garfield in drag. It’s a pity that a well-meaning song has attracted some harsh words, but at the same time, it’s a pity that we live in a world where LGBT rights are still an issue.

* Denzel Washington has re-teamed with his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua for a movie based on the ’80s TV series, The Equalizer. The trailer previews the actor’s reluctant hero trying to help damsel-in-distress Chloe Grace Moretz, and the film releases in September.

* John Slattery talked to the Daily Beast about the last episode of Mad Men – until 2015 – and also got his thoughts on working with the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in his directorial debut, God’s Pocket.
