Charlize Theron Goes Home in Young Adult

2012 was going to be a big year for Charlize Theron even before she became a mother. The Oscar-winning star has 3 films on the go, each of them attracting a growing amount of anticipation. Young Adult, which was released in some territories, including the US last year, makes its debut in her home country of South Africa this weekend. Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus are due out in June.

The Oscar-winning actress told me she was relishing being back in front of the camera, living the “gypsy life”, with all these roles. This was, of course, before the adoption of young Jackson was revealed, and so I imagine now she might be more content to stay at home again.

In Young Adult, Charlize plays Mavis, the girl everybody loved to hate in high-school; the one who never quite grew up and is holding onto a life gone by, which includes an old flame who’s now married. The role earned the actress a Golden Globe nomination, and here she talks about going back to Benoni, her (and my) hometown.

Young Adult opens in South Africa this weekend, and is available on Blu-ray in the US.

Charlize Theron, Die Antwoord and Fishpaste Jars

Next to, “how bad is the crime there?” and “you don’t sound South African?”, one of the most frequent questions I get asked here is, “do you know Die Antwoord?” (this is usually followed up by, “are they for real?”). To say the band has made an impact overseas is an understatement, but with a following that includes filmmaker David Lynch and singer Katy Perry, I wanted to know if our girl Charlize was a fan too.

Charlize Theron’s new movie, Young Adult, is driven by an 80′s soundtrack (and the Mini Cooper she drives in it even has a tape-deck player), so I wanted to know some of her favourite bands right now, and whether she listens to Die Antwoord. For the first part, she credits iTunes with opening her up to new artists. Here is her response to the second part – along with co-star Patton Oswalt’s reaction.

The Time Charlize Theron Called Me a B****

I usually save these little behind-the-scenes anecdotes from interviews for when the film releases, but this one is too good to hold back on. I can title this in my memoirs to come, as “The Time Charlize Theron Called Me A Bitch.” Of course, if you listen to the audio below, you’ll get the full story.

Just a little scene-setter for you. This is after our TV interview, at the press conference, for Young Adult, where Charlize and her co-star Patton Oswalt are taking questions about the soon-to-be-released movie in which her character goes back to her home-town. Now you know I’m a proud Benoni gal, so naturally we bonded over that in the first encounter of the day. Or so I thought…(insert wink-eyed emoticon here)
