Entertainment Express: Baftas, DGA, Zero Dark Thirty, Mali’s Festival in the Desert, Led Zeppelin

* Awards season is all a-go: Ben Affleck just picked up his first nomination from the Directors Guild of America for best feature. He’s up against previous winners Tom Hooper (Les Miserables) Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), Ang Lee (Life of Pi) and Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty).

* Meanwhile, a true-blue American story leads Britain’s version of the Oscars. Lincoln has scored 10 Bafta nominations, including best picture, while Life of Pi and Les Miserables each have 9, and Skyfall follows with 8. However, neither Lincoln‘s director, Steven Spielberg, nor Les Mis‘s Tom Hooper nor Skyfall‘s Sam Mendes picked up a best director nod.

* In the ongoing controversy surrounding Zero Dark Thirty and its depiction of torture, protestors took to the Tuesday night premiere in Washington DC. The film, tipped to be a frontrunner at the Oscar’s next month, has been fielding criticism from commentators and politicians, while its director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal maintain it is just a movie and not a documentary, nor do they endorse the actions it displays.

* Mali’s Festival in the Desert, which had been held for the past decade near Timbuktu and attracted big-name Western acts, has been banned by militants there. But there’s a new generation of Malian musicians who, despite censorship and the ongoing troubles in that country, are trying to keep playing on.  The new event will be called Festival in Exile, and will be a caravan of artists who travel and perform through West Africa, culminating in a three-day event in Burkina Faso.

* And in a big about-turn, Led Zeppelin will soon join Spotify. Well, at least their back catalogue will. Formerly one of the bands you would not find on the streaming service (along with the likes of The Beatles and AC/DC), the group’s music is due to be available on Spotify soon, as well as possibly other online sources too. Add Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Spotify is going from music strength-to-strength.

Entertainment Express: Led Zeppelin, CNN Heroes, Lady Gaga, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Brad Pitt.

* Sunday night was a busy one on both US coasts – in Los Angeles, the CNN Heroes ceremony took place, where celebs like 50 Cent handed real-life heroes like South Africa’s Thulani Madondo awards for their efforts to make the world a better place…

* …while across the country, in Washington DC, President Barack Obama handed out Kennedy Center Honors, to more-than-deserving recipients like Led Zeppelin, David Letterman and Dustin Hoffman.

* DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg was given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which was presented to Oprah last year, as part of the honorary Oscars handed out this weekend. Katzenberg may head up what is arguably the biggest animation company around, but his heart seems to be just as large – given his intense fundraising abilities and role in setting up a telethon in the days after the 9/11 attacks. I would have given him the award just for helping to bring The Little Mermaid to life!

* At the box office, Brad Pitt’s Killing Them Softly, which premiered at Cannes earlier this year, has not fared well against the current crop of movies on circuit like Lincoln, Skyfall and the final Twilight installment.

* Lady Gaga did what most new visitors to South Africa do – she went on “safari” (although we usually call it a game drive) and took lots of pictures. This was before playing a 2-hour show in Joburg, and visiting a primary school, ahead of her second Born This Way Ball in Cape Town on Monday night.

[P.S The Prodigy also played SA this weekend. See, it really is the place to be!]

Entertainment Express: Led Zeppelin, Twilight, Richard Gere, Tom Petty, Beyonce

* The remaining members of Led Zeppelin were in New York on Tuesday to give a press conference (in which they tried to dodge reunion questions) , and premiere their concert movie, Celebration Day.

* Cementing a year that looks set to culminate in an Oscar nod for his performance in Arbitrage, Richard Gere will be honoured with a Hollywood Career Achievement Award in a few weeks.

* As part of a global publicity tour, the Twilight stars will head to various countries around the world this month – Robert Pattinson heads to Australia, Kristen Stewart to Japan, Taylor Lautner to Brazil + Kellan Lutz & Nikki Reed head to Scotland & Ireland, while Ashley Greene gets to go to South Africa – lucky gal!

* In the market for a new car? Tom Petty is auctioning off his favourite convertible in aid of MSF.

* The remake of Clint Eastwood’s A Star is Born has stalled with the news that Beyonce, who was set to play the role made famous by Barbara Streisand, will not be featuring in the movie.

Led Zeppelin talk Celebration Day

It’s been a question long on the minds of many Led Zeppelin fans – whether the band’s remaining members would reform again like they did on the night of 2007′s 02 Arena, in tribute to their friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. It was a concert 20 million people reportedly applied for tickets to, yet only 18 000 secured spots inside the iconic British band’s first headline show in 27 years.

Now, almost 5 years later, that show – all 2 hours and 16 songs of it – will be released on the big screen and on DVD, and in various other forms. And, if the band’s indirect replies to any kind of questions about re-uniting again are to be understood, this may certainly be the only chance to see them play together again.

Quite possibly though, watching Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Robert Plant power through their songs, along with the late John Bonham’s son Jason on drums, Celebration Day might do more to feed the desire to see the group live in the flesh. The film is all about the musicians – the focus they have on their instruments, the looks they shoot briefly to each other, the techniques that made them one of the most influential bands of all time. There are hardly any audience shots, and there are no interviews or backstage antics. It’s the best view you’d get of the band – even if you were in the cheap seats!

Jones, Page and Plant, together with Jason, premiered the film in New York on Tuesday night, after a press conference. During it, they talked about the process of selecting which songs to include on the setlist that night, what it was like to play with John Bonham’s son, and, awkwardly, how “inane” it is to be asked about getting back together again.

Here Jason talks about playing with “Led Zeppelin”…

Their final question came from me. I asked, since they always remained in creative control of their music and their works, and were so influential, whether they believe Led Zeppelin could have existed in today’s music world…
