The Cannes Diaries – The Coen Brothers Come to Town

Thanks to Joel and Ethan Coen, I left the Palais des Festivals on Saturday night a lot happier than I entered it. The relentless rain had put a damper on the atmosphere, and I found myself really missing the sunshine that graced us the day – for only a day – before. The brothers Coen have created a film that is tragically funny, and yet just so lovely in its dispiriting nature. It focusses on a struggling musician, Llewyn – the fictional character inspired by the memoir of folk singer Dave Van Ronk – in New York’s folk music scene just before Bob Dylan rose to fame.

The lead role is played by Oscar Isaac, who is already having heaps of praise lauded onto him for this film. One of the best parts of the film is that we are treated to full-length songs by the actor, who until now, has not had a starring role to shine in. I wanted to clap after each one. At a press conference for the film on Sunday, Ethan Coen called the search for the lead “a casting challenge; we were screwed before we met Oscar Isaac”. Music producer T Bone Burnett, who performed with Dylan, added: “The odds against us making the film at all were very long. The odds against us finding Oscar Isaac were one in 17 million.” Oscar appeared visually touched by the comments from journalists in the room about his stellar performance.

Carey Mulligan, who has also been here for The Great Gatsby, is also in the film, and her husband, Marcus Mumford helped with its soundtrack. In a press conference filled with a lot of laughs, Carey revealed she only told the Coens she could sing so she could get the part. Her voice isn’t bad actually, and she sings alongside her husband in the film, Justin Timberlake. And there’s also a certain cat that has a starring role. It’s sweet and sad and all quite lovely.

Entertainment Express: Adam Yauch, Justin Timberlake, Lauryn Hill, Iron Man 3, The Met Costume Gala

Adam Yauch[Pic: Nadia Neophytou]

* This past weekend marked a year since Beastie Boys’ MCA aka Adam Yauch died from cancer. Brooklyn celebrated his life – on Friday, Palmetto Playground, where he used to play as a child, was named after him, and yesterday, MCA Day brought fans and friends together with art that paid tribute to his legacy. In Long Island City, a mural went up at 5 Pointz, by artist Danielle Mastrion (who was also behind this).

* Justin Timberlake played a corporate-sponsored gig on Sunday night, and on Instagram revealed plans for the second installment of The 20/20 Experience and new tour dates. Glad to see he’s reduced the time in between albums from 6 years to 6 months.

* Someone who has taken even longer than Justin to release new music is Lauryn Hill. And this, it seems, was under duress. As the Grammy-winning singer faces sentencing today for tax evasion, she released a new song called Neurotic Society on iTunes, as part of a deal she made with Sony that will likely help her avoid prison time.

* Iron Man 3 opened to – as pretty much expected – record numbers, pulling in over $500 million dollars in its opening weekend, internationally, and around $175 million in the US, making it the number 2 best-debuting film, beaten only by its Marvel bedfellow The Avengers (which opened with $207 million last year).

* The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Gala – aka the fashion Oscars – takes place tonight. Much has been written about the unlikely event of having punk, which is the theme of this year’s Costume Institute exhibition, feted by Vogue magazine. It opens Thursday. I’m getting a sneak peak today, so check back later for pics and an update.

Entertainment Express: Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, David R Ellis, Argo, Pretty Yende

* Not one to rest on her oh-so-toned laurels, Beyonce made the announcement immediately after pulling out all the stops for her Super Bowl performance, that she’ll soon be heading out on a world tour. And world means Europe and North America, for now at least.

* Ahead of his appearance at the Grammys this Sunday, Justin Timberlake took to a New Orleans stage on Saturday night for his first solo concert in 5 years. While Jay-Z didn’t join in his wife’s Super Bowl spotlight, he did pop up on JT’s stage, as did the singer’s SexyBack collaborator, Timberlake.

* It’s been announced that filming on the anime movie, Kite, which was the last project director and stuntman David R Ellis was working on before he was found dead in a Joburg hotel room, will go ahead. Shooting is due to begin in South Africa this month, and Samuel L Jackson will still star in the movie, citing Ellis’ “zest and enthusiasm” as the reason he took on the part in the first place and why he’ll honour his commitment too. Jerusalema director Ralph Ziman now fills the director’s seat.

* In keeping with Ben Affleck’s “take-that” winning streak, Argo earned him the DGA’s stamp of approval for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film – a feat many see as almost all but surely sealing the film’s destiny, come Oscar night. Searching for Sugar Man won Malik Bendjelloul the documentary category, which also bodes well for him too.

* South African soprano Pretty Yende is a star in the making, who’s currently winning over audiences at the Metropolitan Opera’s Le Comte Ory shows. She sings the role of Countess Adele in Rossini’s comic piece – a part she learnt in only 11 days when the original singer fell ill. Keep an eye on this 27-year-old, who also performed with Andrea Bocelli at his most recent Central Park show.

Entertainment Express: The Muppets…Again, Barbra Streisand, Steven Spielberg, Depeche Mode, Justin Timberlake

muppets

* A Muppets sequel has started production in London. This time, Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey triple the fun, along with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Walter and rest of the gang in The Muppets…Again! The film is directed by James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords, Da Ali G Show), who also happens to be nominated for a BAFTA for The Muppets (Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer). Looking forward to welcoming the crew back next March!

* Add Barbra Streisand to the list of those performing at the upcoming Oscars ceremony and it might not matter what kind of job Seth McFarlane does. “Babs”, a Best Actress winner for 1968′s Funny Girl, will perform her own special segment. It’s the first time in over 35 years she’s sung on an Oscar stage. She last performed at the ceremony in 1977, when she sang Evergreen, the theme for A Star is Born, which earned her Best Original Song. That’s the award Adele, who’ll also be performing, is up for this year too.

* Steven Spielberg may not be receiving much love in the way of directing awards for Lincoln, but he will be honored with the American Cinema Editors Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award at the Eddie Awards in February. The organisation has, rightly so, called him a “cinematic treasure” and wants to honour him for the past 4 decades of his work.

* Justin Timberlake will don his “Suit & Tie” (you know I couldn’t resist) to perform at the Grammys on February 10th. The 6-time Grammy winner joins the pack of performers, which already includes the likes of Rihanna, Fun., Taylor Swift, Jack White, the Black Keys, Carrie Underwood, the Lumineers, and Mumford & Sons, plus a special first-time duet between Elton John and nominee Ed Sheeran. That, I cannot wait to see.

* Depeche Mode finally seem ready to release more details about their newest album – the first studio record in 13 years. ”With this release we’ve completely shifted our idea of how to create an album,” Dave Gahan has said, making me wonder how much of a departure from their traditional sound they’ve made. All will be known in March, when Delta Machine is set for release. A sneak-peak video come out on Friday.

Entertainment Express: Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Oprah, The Carrie Diaries, Khaled Hosseini

justin_timberlake

* The music fraternity is responding in earnest to the new track Justin Timberlake finally, after 6 years, has put out, noting the somewhat understated nature of its release. Suit & Tie is the prelude to The 20/20 Experience, due out soon.

* February’s going to be one big month of Beyonce. As the singer prepares to premiere her documentary on HBO on the 16th, she’s also gearing up to play the Super Bowl half-time show on the 3rd, reportedly with her Destiny’s Child cohorts. Ahead of Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland joining Bey for some of her show, comes  Nuclear - a Pharrell-produced 90s-inspired love-tempo track off their new album, out at the end of January. Just in time for February!

* Oprah’s preparing for a huge boost in ratings if the hype around her interview with disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong is anything to go by. It’s believed he made a confession to the talk show queen about his doping scandal in the interview, which will air this Thursday and Friday.

* As pundits mull over possible crossover wins between the Golden Globes and the upcoming Oscars, figures for Sunday night’s ceremony reveal the awards show drew nearly 20 million viewers. And it all it took was two smart gals, Jodie Foster and 42nd US president.

* The Carrie Diaries made its long-awaited debut, providing the background to a show that changed TV as we know it. Long-time Carrie fans are being provided with a backstory to the iconic character, while young new fans will gain a different introduction to the woman who made Manolos and Magnolia’s famous.

* Author best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini’s new book, And The Mountains Echoed is set for release in May. It’s reported the book will deal with many of the themes the Afghani writer is known for - betrayal, honor and sacrifice.

Entertainment Express: Alf Kumalo, Yash Chopra, Bruce Springsteen, Adele, Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel

* Legendary South African photographer Alf Kumalo passed away on Sunday, after losing his battle to cancer. From Ali to Mandela, Makeba to Masekela, Kumalo captured it all.

* Bollywood has bid farewell to 80-year old filmmaker Yash Chopra, who is credited with launching the careers of heavyweights Amitabh Bachan and Shah Rukh Khan.

* With just two weeks to go until the US Presidential Election, Bruce Springsteen will give a free concert at an Obama for America rally in the swing state of Virginia on Tuesday.

* 2012′s CMJ Music Festival came to an end this weekend, with over 1300 bands playing all over the city, taking their turns to win over audience affection.

* Songstress Adele gave birth to her little, while Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake spent their first weekend together as man and wife.
