Entertainment Express: Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, David R Ellis, Argo, Pretty Yende

* Not one to rest on her oh-so-toned laurels, Beyonce made the announcement immediately after pulling out all the stops for her Super Bowl performance, that she’ll soon be heading out on a world tour. And world means Europe and North America, for now at least.

* Ahead of his appearance at the Grammys this Sunday, Justin Timberlake took to a New Orleans stage on Saturday night for his first solo concert in 5 years. While Jay-Z didn’t join in his wife’s Super Bowl spotlight, he did pop up on JT’s stage, as did the singer’s SexyBack collaborator, Timberlake.

* It’s been announced that filming on the anime movie, Kite, which was the last project director and stuntman David R Ellis was working on before he was found dead in a Joburg hotel room, will go ahead. Shooting is due to begin in South Africa this month, and Samuel L Jackson will still star in the movie, citing Ellis’ “zest and enthusiasm” as the reason he took on the part in the first place and why he’ll honour his commitment too. Jerusalema director Ralph Ziman now fills the director’s seat.

* In keeping with Ben Affleck’s “take-that” winning streak, Argo earned him the DGA’s stamp of approval for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film – a feat many see as almost all but surely sealing the film’s destiny, come Oscar night. Searching for Sugar Man won Malik Bendjelloul the documentary category, which also bodes well for him too.

* South African soprano Pretty Yende is a star in the making, who’s currently winning over audiences at the Metropolitan Opera’s Le Comte Ory shows. She sings the role of Countess Adele in Rossini’s comic piece – a part she learnt in only 11 days when the original singer fell ill. Keep an eye on this 27-year-old, who also performed with Andrea Bocelli at his most recent Central Park show.

Beyonce’s Super Bowl

BeyonceSuperBowl

Pyrotechnics, two faces in the shape of her likeness, some star-powered hologram treatment and a whole lot of signature booty-shaking – that’s how Beyonce won the SuperBowl.

Even before the moment the singer’s svelte self strutted – make that strode – onto the halftime stage at Sunday’s Super Bowl, it was already a clear fact Beyonce’s appearance was the most anticipated aspect of this year’s game. She’s already known for putting on a no-holds-barred show, something I was lucky enough to experience when she filmed her DVD at the Roseland Ballroom in 2011, but this is the Super Bowl so it was always going to require a little bit more. The upset over her pre-recorded singing at the Inauguration added just a little bit more to that more. And so, after two weeks of controversy and four months of preparation, Beyonce out-performed Beyonce with a fierceness that seemed to be targeted directly at her critics.

And as if that wasn’t enough, she then announced the Mrs Carter World Tour. And by world she means Europe and North America. No word yet on whether more dates will be added later.

As for the adverts that made their debut during the SuperBowl, I found the Budweiser Clydesdales one hard to resist. Can’t go wrong with Stevie Nicks singing Landslide, a baby horse, his cute owner and an adorable reunion.

And kudos to South African actor Fana Mokoena who appeared in the trailer for the upcoming World War Z, alongside Brad Pitt. The film’s release date varies from country to country, starting from around June onwards.

Entertainment Express: Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Oprah, The Carrie Diaries, Khaled Hosseini

* The music fraternity is responding in earnest to the new track Justin Timberlake finally, after 6 years, has put out, noting the somewhat understated nature of its release. Suit & Tie is the prelude to The 20/20 Experience, due out soon.

* February’s going to be one big month of Beyonce. As the singer prepares to premiere her documentary on HBO on the 16th, she’s also gearing up to play the Super Bowl half-time show on the 3rd, reportedly with her Destiny’s Child cohorts. Ahead of Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland joining Bey for some of her show, comes  Nuclear - a Pharrell-produced 90s-inspired love-tempo track off their new album, out at the end of January. Just in time for February!

* Oprah’s preparing for a huge boost in ratings if the hype around her interview with disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong is anything to go by. It’s believed he made a confession to the talk show queen about his doping scandal in the interview, which will air this Thursday and Friday.

* As pundits mull over possible crossover wins between the Golden Globes and the upcoming Oscars, figures for Sunday night’s ceremony reveal the awards show drew nearly 20 million viewers. And it all it took was two smart gals, Jodie Foster and 42nd US president.

* The Carrie Diaries made its long-awaited debut, providing the background to a show that changed TV as we know it. Long-time Carrie fans are being provided with a backstory to the iconic character, while young new fans will gain a different introduction to the woman who made Manolos and Magnolia’s famous.

* Author best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini’s new book, And The Mountains Echoed is set for release in May. It’s reported the book will deal with many of the themes the Afghani writer is known for - betrayal, honor and sacrifice.

Entertainment Express: Led Zeppelin, Twilight, Richard Gere, Tom Petty, Beyonce

* The remaining members of Led Zeppelin were in New York on Tuesday to give a press conference (in which they tried to dodge reunion questions) , and premiere their concert movie, Celebration Day.

* Cementing a year that looks set to culminate in an Oscar nod for his performance in Arbitrage, Richard Gere will be honoured with a Hollywood Career Achievement Award in a few weeks.

* As part of a global publicity tour, the Twilight stars will head to various countries around the world this month – Robert Pattinson heads to Australia, Kristen Stewart to Japan, Taylor Lautner to Brazil + Kellan Lutz & Nikki Reed head to Scotland & Ireland, while Ashley Greene gets to go to South Africa – lucky gal!

* In the market for a new car? Tom Petty is auctioning off his favourite convertible in aid of MSF.

* The remake of Clint Eastwood’s A Star is Born has stalled with the news that Beyonce, who was set to play the role made famous by Barbara Streisand, will not be featuring in the movie.

Entertainment Express: Tony Scott, Rihanna, Beyonce, Willie Nelson, Nicki Minaj, John Lennon’s Killer

* Filmmaker Tony Scott has died at the age of 68. He’s alleged to committed suicide by jumping off an LA bridge on Sunday afternoon. The director, writer, producer and cinematographer, who is also the younger brother of Ridley, gave us a number of classic films, from Top Gun to Enemy of the State, True Romance, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Crimson Tide, and more. He had reportedly been working on a Top Gun 2 in recent days.

* The United Nations says it achieved its goal of reaching a billion people with its World Humanitarian Day message, using Beyonce’s music video for I Was Here, the theme for this year’s initiative.

* Rihanna told Oprah in an interview that aired in the US on Sunday night that she has forgiven Chris Brown for his abusive behaviour, and that they’re still friends, following the Grammys incident in 2009.

* 79-year-old Willie Nelson and 29-year-old Nicki Minaj have both had to cancel shows due to illness – Nelson as a result of issues with his breathing, Minaj for vocal chord problems.

* Mark David Chapman, the man who killed John Lennon, is up for parole this week, for the seventh time.

* Beyonce and Jay-Z both snapped up honours at the BET Awards, while South African singer Lira lost out on Best International Act to Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie and Nigeria’s Wizkid.

* After Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced they were divorcing, reports like this one by Princess Di biographer Andrew Morton, have suggested Scientology played a big part in the break-up.

* Gotye, contrary to a CNN report, is not dead.

* Dave Matthews has a new song out! It’s off the forthcoming album, Away From the World, due out in September.

* Filming on the sequel to the Spud movie began on Sunday. Author John van der Ruit is tweeting from the set of Spud: The Madness Continues.

* In case you missed it, Adele announced she and boyfriend Simon Konecki are expecting their first child.

Beyonce – One Night (of Four) in NYC

Four New York

It had been raining the whole day.

Relentlessly.

The kind of rain that makes you question what you’re doing outside in it – never mind standing in a queue, waiting to get into a concert.

But that’s what being a fan’s all about. And if Sunday night’s show is anything to go by, Beyonce’s fans are the definition of the word. Many of them waited in the pouring rain for hours and hours before the doors of the Roseland Ballroom in NYC opened. I spoke to a few umbrella-holding, dust-bin-bag-wearing fans, outside:

It took a good few hours to let people in. The queue wrapped itself around the building – twice.

This didn’t go unnoticed by Beyonce herself. Before she even began the first note of the first song, Bey thanked her fans, acknowledging she has some of the best in the world.

There she was, in a tiny gold dress, appearing on the stage before us. “This show is gonna be a little bit different. I wanna tell you guys my story. Y’all might know some of this stuff already, so I’m gonna want you to sing along loudly. By age 5 I knew exactly what I wanted to be…”

“You guys” would be the 3 and a half thousand fans or so who’ve gathered at the Roseland Ballroom for this, the first of a four-night exclusive residency here in New York. Sunday night’s was taped for what’s believed will be the next DVD release, coming out in the next few months.

After starting with The Jackson Five’s, I Wanna Be Where You Are, she runs through a retrospective of her career with Destiny’s Child, with her dancers playing the part of Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland. Bey moves through the catalogue, swiftly and energetically – bringing together hit after hit, with little vignettes in between. Like about how her dad told them to improve and how they were dropped from Electra Records and picked up by Columbia.

She moves onto her solo work, relaying how she was initially told there were no hit singles on her debut album, Dangerously In Love. “Yeah, I guess they were right,” she smirks. “There wasn’t one hit single. There were five.” Cue rapturous cheers from the crowd.

As the strains of Bonnie and Clyde ’08 begin to play, Bey tells of how, in spite of it all, she was lonely. Of course we know what this song means. Bey refers to hubby Jay-Z, who is in Miami for the night, again later before she launches into Single Ladies.

She spends most of the night concentrating on Four, bringing it to life, almost 3-D like, before our ears and eyes. She moves from being on top of the piano for 1+1 to sitting on a white stool for I Don’t Care; from allowing the crowd to sing most of I Miss You to knocking back the vocals  for Rather Die Young. With Best Thing I Never Had, she encourages the audience to sing to their exes – and boy, do they ever! By the time Run The World (Girls) comes, the crowd is in frenzy.

Final song, I Was Here, leaves the audience with the lasting image of Beyonce, bright lights flashing around her, as she stands a lone figure, head tilted back, hair flying behind her, that voice coming out powerful and measured.

There’s nothing like experiencing her playful pouting, her flirtatious moves, her sexy booty-shaking live. A DVD will be great, but let’s hope there are plans for this mini-tour to travel and become a bigger one to lands beyond. Otherwise, for Beyonce fans around the world, this would then be one of the best things they never had.
