There’s an art to partying one’s way around the Oscars. Or so I am told. I haven’t been to too many of them to consider myself a pro just yet, but I do know it involves “pacing oneself” and having plenty of party frocks on hand. It also involves being cool-headed even when Anthony Mackie is buying you a drink.
Last night I went to the fabulous and exclusive Soho House for the Grey Goose pre-Oscar bash, or soirée, as I like to call it. With so many dashing Frenchmen around in the form of the Grey Goose Brand Ambassadors Guillaume, Ludo and Dimi, a girl can’t help but get swept up in the romantic elegance of it all. And if that wasn’t enough, the roof-top garden of Soho House created a fitting ambience that added to the atmosphere. Night lilies filled the pond in the centre, with little lanterns hanging from the trees – it really did feel like a fairy winter wonderland.
And The Queen was there too! Well, Dame Helen Mirren, looking fantastic, with her husband director Taylor Hackford. Would love to know her secret – although I doubt it involves a love for chocolate brownies!
The 2007 Oscar winner sat at a table next to the baseball-wearing Leonardo DiCaprio, who was hanging out with his guy friends, including Entourage star Kevin Connolly. And of course, right next to them was a pack of adoring girls. I didn’t want to seem like just another one of them, but Leo was seated right near the delicious macaroons making it hard not to want to keep on walking over!
At the other end of the food buffet was John Stamos, as dashing in person as he is on the screen. With Gina Gershon close behind him, John was going for the paella. Over at the bar, while I was waiting for a Pas De Deux (a Grey Goose drink inspired by Black Swan) he went to greet the bartender and almost tripped and fell in the process. I like to think I would have been there to save Uncle Jesse had he gone down!
Someone who saved me – well, my feet – was Serena Williams. She offered me the seat next to her when she saw me in a little bit of agony in my new shoes. We chatted about the DJs who were playing and how much we were enjoying their mix of golden oldies mixed in with Britney! DJ Mia Moretti and violinist Caitlin Moe make up The Dolls and they are such fun! Putting new spins on MGMT and Daft Punk, they performed at NY Fashion Week too where I first saw them.
I really do need a better line for Piers Morgan than, “hi Piers, I’m from South Africa”. I can’t be blamed though, I was too busy thinking about my Helen Mirren approach…also, need to figure out how to be in two places at the same time. Missed Javier Bardem downstairs because I was too enamoured with the beautiful people upstairs and a compelling piano player called Elew, who had everyone around him, including Michelle Monaghan, entranced. But I did find out from The Goose Insider that his wife Penelope Cruz, who recently gave birth, wasn’t with him last night but she is expected to be with him on Oscar Sunday.
It was great to have a quick catch-up with Lionel Richie, who reminisced about his tour in SA, and a chat to Anthony Mackie, whom I interviewed last week at The Adjustment Bureau junket (he was wearing the most gorgeous blue shirt then and has such impeccable style). The actor, who is on the cover of Vanity Fair’s Young Hollywood issue, was part of last year’s Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker and he says he thinks Toy Story 3 deserves to win the category this year because it made him cry. Bless.
If you’re crossing fingers for Black Swan, here’s how to make your own Grey Goose Pas De Deux:
30 ml Grey Goose Le Citron
20 ml Crème Yvette
25 ml Blackberry purée
30 ml Lychee juice
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a coupette. Garnish with a white rose petal.
