[News] The 2011 Gotham Independent Film Awards

Charlize Theron, Gary Oldman and director David Cronenberg all received top honours for their contribution to indie cinema at the Independent Film Project’s annual awards ceremony at Cipriani’s Wall Street on Monday night. A quick flash of the Benoni card to Charlize, and she was talking to me about the newest statue on her mantle-piece as being a “great cherry on a big cake,” and about how glorious it is to be able to do something you love all the time.

The ceremony is also considered a pre-cursor to movie award season, and it gives an indication of which films are certain to get some of that Oscar buzz. Here are the rest of the night’s winners, as we get closer to the Oscars race:

Best Feature: The Tree of Life and Beginners
Best Documentary: Better This World
Best Ensemble: Beginners
Breakthrough Actor: Felicity Jones, Like Crazy
Breakthrough Director: Dee Rees for Pariah
Audience Award: Girlfriend
Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You: Scenes of a Crime

Gary Oldman

Felicity Jones

  1. He is a fantastic actor. I’ve yet to see him in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but that looks good too.
