Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Brooklyn

It starts with a voice. Then eight more join in. It’s a simple formula but it’s served Ladysmith Black Mambazo well in the fifty years the group has been around. What started out as a dream by Joseph Tshabalala to make music softly, gently, in a style that’s otherwise known as isicathamiya, has grown into the 3-time Grammy-winning musical force known the world round.

The group has just wrapped up a 3-month tour of the US, and will now head back to South Africa. But not for long…take a listen to my brief interview with Albert Mazibuko and Sibongiseni Shabalala, backstage at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday night, to find out why.

In the words of LBM, may you go in “peace, love and harmony” this week.

They certainly made sure the packed auditorium at Saturday’s show will certainly do so.
