I met Jake Gyllenhaal and his beard at the Toronto International Film Festival where End of Watch made its US premiere. It was almost 6pm, but he was still in good spirits, even though I was feeling delirious from a day full of interviews and screenings. The drama about two cops who attempt to bust a drug cartel works because of the great rapport between his character and Michael Pena’s, so I was surprised to find out from the director beforehand that the two didn’t get on right away, and they really had to work at developing that on-screen relationship.
Continuing with the local link, Michael impressed me with his South African accent. Turns out he’s friends with Cokey Falkow and his brother, Mike, two South African actors who now live in LA. At least he has a good example to copy should he ever be cast as a South African one day.
End of Watch hits the SA cinema circuit this weekend.
