Entertainment Express: Prince, Mary J Blige, Jimi Jamison, Houdini, Guardians of the Galaxy

Hello from New York City – much has been said about the leaking of nude celeb photos but I wholeheartedly agree with this Independent column that female actresses don’t exist solely for the public’s titillation. Now, onto today’s stories worth knowing…

* Prince has dropped two new tracks ahead of the two new releases he promised us last week – one from each of the albums. Whitecaps is lead by the voice of his 3rdEyeGirl bandmates, while he keeps things mellow with U Know, his trademark falsetto on display as he pays homage to women. Both albums are coming at the end of the month, so not too long to go before the purple takeover.

* Mary J Blige has spent a month in the UK, working with British artists like Sam Smith, Disclosure and Naughty Boy, in preparation for the release of her new album. Ten new songs will make up Mary J Blige: The London Sessions, with a new-found variety and vulnerability added to the Queen of Soul’s voice. I’m excited to hear the outcome of her recording at famed RAK studios where Radiohead and The Smiths made albums, especially considering how well the first collab with Disclosure F For You turned out.

* Jimi Jamison, former singer for the group Survivor (after they had a hit with the track Eye of the Tiger) has died of a heart-attack. He was the voice behind classic soundtrack hits like Burning Heart from Rocky IV and The Moment of Truth from Karate Kid.

* Adrien Brody is getting to fulfill a childhood dream in the two-part Houdini series on the History Channel. Turns out the Oscar-winning actor used to perform his own little tricks for his family, under the moniker “The Amazing Adrien.” Johnny Depp may be next in trying his hand at the tricks too, as a feature film about the illusionist is in development too.

* There’s been a lot of talk about the Summer box office in the US, and how dismal it was (down 15% from last year). The good news is inventive, smaller-budget films still seem to have a chance at winning over audiences, which hopefully means we will get to see more of them. On that note, congrats to Guardians of the Galaxy for becoming the season’s top-grossing title.
