A Zimbabwean Zombie-Killer: Danai Gurira in The Walking Dead 3

Actress Danai Gurira is the hottest addition to The Walking Dead cast, playing Michonne, one of the most anticipated characters of the hit series. Michonne first made her appearance at the end of the second season finale, when she saved Andrea (Lauren Holden) from a walker, by decapitating it with her katana.

Here are 8 things to know about the actress and the character she plays:

  • Danai was born in the US, but grew up in Zimbabwe. “I was born in Grinnell, Iowa, but  at the age of 5, we went to Zim where I went to primary school and high school.  I consider myself half and half, and I spend half my time there and half of it here (in the US). Oh, and she speaks some Shona too.
  • Danai didn’t know she’d been cast as Michonne when the final season played out in March 2012. The role hadn’t been cast yet by the time the last shot of season 2 – in which Michonne makes her first appearance – was filmed. Viewers only saw the back of her character so it didn’t matter anyway that it was a stand-in.
  • The New York University graduate had won theatre accolades for her off-Broadway work, and also appeared in movies like Restless City, and TV shows like Law & Order and Treme, before scoring this much-coveted role.
  • The show’s creator Robert Kirkman told The Hollywood Reporter, Danai ticked all the right boxes. “There’s a lot to that role, and Danai, more than any other actress, showed us that she could exhibit that strength and show what an intense character she could be and, at the same time, have that emotional core and be able to show a vulnerability to a certain extent that we don’t see much of but is definitely there.”
  • At San Diego Comic Con, Danai expressed how ready she had been for the role: “What you see through the writing and vision of the creator, you add to it by bringing your full humanity and by really delving into the character’s background and their motives and fears, all those things can make a multidimensional character come to life. That’s how I’ve been trained from the beginning and how I’ve created characters in the past on the stage or through my playwriting.”

  • The close friendship her character shares with Andrea on screen is mirrored in real life between Danai and Lauren Holden, who frequently sing to each other on set. Lauren says: “Andrea and Michonne are a wonderful combination. They genuinely love each other as people, and they’re battling the elements together so it’s really rich story-telling. It’s unexpected, in that it’s not in the comics, but it’s this wonderful, glorious departure. It’s great when women stick together…Danai is a wonderful addition to our cast, and she fits right in.”
  • Speaking of fitting right in, Danai joined the cast in the full sense – they all live in the same apartment complex in Peachtree City, Georgia, where the show is filmed.
  • Danai admits she was a little nervous to take on a character that people already love: “She already has her own built-in fanbase. Usually you create a character, but like with most comic genres, she’s a full entity on her own. It’s like she’s whispering in my ear: ‘don’t get me wrong, don’t mess this up.’
  • The actress is a big philanthropist. She has an organization called Almasi Collaborative Arts, aimed at “incalcating professionalism in the arts in Zim. It’s based on specific experiences I had there. I decided to really just put my foot in it and make a full time commitment.”

The Walking Dead airs on Fox International on Top TV in South Africa, and on AMC in the US, Sundays from October 14th.

Howzit San Diego Comic-Con!

I’m in San Diego! For the first time! And for the first time, I’m going to Comic-Con, along with about 100 000 other fans, authors, actors, publicists, Wonder-Woman-lookalikes, and fellow journalists. I’ve been told to expect a whole lot of wonderful madness, crazy costumes, and long lines that test patience levels far beyond the usual film-festival fare.

While at Comic-Con I’m looking forward to finding out first-hand what’s coming in the next season of The Walking Dead. After visiting the set in Georgia last year, I, like so many others, am eagerly waiting for the next episodes of the hit show. At this year’s Comic-Con, there’ll be a Walking Dead Escape event, which is an obstacle course where players will get to be chased by zombies while trying to climb over cars and cargo nets – just like in the show.

The comic book series celebrates its 100th issue during Comic-Con, and apparently this issue is a harrowing game changer. In the meantime, writer and creator Robert Kirkman will be unveiling some never-before-seen footage from Season Three. Can’t wait!

There are so many other big film panels taking place – Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley will talk about Eylsium, their next project working together after District 9; Quentin Tarantino is due to present his thoughts on Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio, and of course the Twilight cast will be taking over Day 1 as they gather for the last time, to bid farewell to the franchise, ahead of the final film releasing in November. That’s not even mentioning the names Stan Lee or Joe Quesada yet. It’s going to be a fun-filled four days!

Oprah, Erica Kane and McDreamy

You know your day is going to be good when it involves meeting Dr McDreamy. Only mine started out with me not knowing this little nugget of information, when I headed out to the Discovery Upfront at the Jazz Centre at the Lincoln Centre on Thursday.

Every year, Discovery Communications likes to show off their latest slate of shows coming soon to a small screen near you. It’s usually a big affair, with singing and dancing (last year Rosie put on a cabaret act) and big names (hello, Oprah). This year may not have been as spectacular, but the programming still looks strong, with a number of new shows that are sure to attract interest – at least a number of them certainly piqued my mine.

Like the one involving Patrick Dempsey. Okay, so I may not be the most knowledgeable on racing cars, but he seemed so enthusiastic about the documentary Road to Le Mans that I couldn’t help but get excited too. We were unaware he was going to be at the event, and I felt my thoughts drift off when the Velocity channel manager started speaking about this new auto racing series. One mention of ‘Patrick Dempsey’, who follows exemplifies the “timeless cool” of other stars who’ve competed on film and in real life, including Paul Newman (Winning), James Garner (Grand Prix) and Steve McQueen (Le Mans), and I suddenly found myself very interested in the art of racing.

It didn’t hurt that upon our meeting, Dempsey was a complete gentleman – sincere and genuine. Looking into my eyes, he expressed his desire to visit South Africa, and held my colleague Lihle Mtshali, and I tightly as we took a pic.

A show that will hold particular relevance for South Africa, and indeed anyone who wants the future generation to grow up with rhinos still being a part of the animal landscape, is Rhino Wars. In 2011, nearly 400 rhinos were killed, and this series follows a group of private game reserves who band together to try to take down poachers by bringing in former U.S. Special Forces operatives. I spoke to the GM of Animal Planet, Marjorie Kaplan afterwards, and she said there are hopes for it to screen in South Africa. In the meantime, it’s slated to show in the US within the next couple of months.

Fighting a battle a little less epic, but still challenging in itself is Oprah, who addressed the crowd, looking a little worse for wear than she did last year, when the idea behind OWN was still fresh and untainted. Oprah, her dogged determination still an example to behold, said she was facing the “climb of her life”, referring to the troubles her network has faced in building an audience since its launch in January last year. “I’m climbing Kilimanjaro…you know that song, The Time of My Life? I’ve had the climb of my life,” she joked, but added that she’s started to see the summit, thanks to restructuring and some necessary changes they’ve made.

Not surprisingly, Oprah didn’t stay to mingle afterwards, but Erica Kane, er I mean Susan Lucci, did. The soapie queen is hosting a series called Deadly Affairs about just that on Investigation Discovery channel. I asked the pint-sized star her secret to looking so good. Her reply? Pilates.

And I suppose no sweet delights from the Pink-Aproned Gals, Sophie And Katherine or Cake Boss‘ Carlo’s Bakery either, I’m sure.

On Set of The Walking Dead

Even before I’d stepped on set of The Walking Dead, I felt like I was in a horror movie just waiting to happen. The small town where the show is being filmed, Peachtree City in Georgia, with its walk-paths in the woods and houses right on the lake, eerily feels as if  someone is just waiting to jump out of the bushes. It didn’t help that there were early Halloween decorations all over the place already either.

The Walking Dead, back for a second season, moves the action from the city of Atlanta to the countryside, at a spot called Hershel’s Farm. Hershel Greene and his daughter Maggie (who will hold particular attention for Steven Yuen’s character, Glenn) are two of the characters that will be introduced in season 2. We drove to the location of Hershel’s farm about 45 minutes from the set in Sharpsburg.

Completely oblivious to the impending zombie-pocalypse

The campsite set up next to house felt so authentic to the series that I spotted a baseball bat I would use for protection should my would-be movie come to life.

The house on the farm that is used in the series is owned by a family that still lives there while the shooting is going on; they just stay on another level of it.

After a little bit of snooping, we then drove to where the action was taking place: another small town called Sharpsburg.

No pictures could be taken on set, so you’ll have to reliably trust my word that Andrew Lincoln, aka Rick Grimes, is just as focused and dedicated in real life as he is in the series. And just as good looking! He sat with the crew as everyone had dinner, and I almost bumped into him emptying his tray when he’d finished. But I’m told he likes to stay in “the zone” so doesn’t really talk a lot in between filming takes.

Yum!

The scene that was being filmed saw Deputy Sheriff Grimes runs out of a house, trying to escape zombies (naturally). Being on a set means hours and hours of hearing and seeing the same scene being shot over and over again. So by the end of it we could say the lines of the two other characters running away from the trouble, and scream along, in perfect unison (under our breathes of course – quiet on set!).

While I wasn’t able to speak to Andrew, I did speak to Jon Bernthal, who plays Shane. He had his dog, Boss, on set. As did Steven Yeun. Even the costume designer had her dog on set. It’s a wonder they don’t get scared with all those flesh-eating beasts running around.

With Jon Bernthal aka Shane

The man who helps create the zombies is Greg Nicotero, who heads up the team that won the Emmy for Outstanding Prosthetics at the awards recently. He told us how he’s such a zombie perfectionist that he sits behind the monitor looking for anything out of place, like a zombie that may have gotten red standing out in the sun or one that is perspiring. “Why would they be sweating”, he rhetorically asks.

Dressing the zombies is the task of costume designer Eulyn Womble, who happens to be from Cape Town, and worked on season one before taking on more responsibility for the second one. She says we’ll see a lot less ties, fewer suits and more of the “ou vrou” with her flower dress to reflect this move to the country. She also says to keep a careful eye on the farm and how people are dressed there, but I couldn’t get any more out of her. Something about being sworn to set secrecy…

Before we drove off, there was one photo I could take – me with one of these famed walkers. The picture didn’t come out as well as it could have, but I think that’s almost a blessing in disguise. I would have had recurring nightmares of her face…

…especially after seeing that corpse in the road as we drove out.

The Walking Dead airs on Top TV’s FX Channel in SA; on AMC in the US.
