I couldn’t have asked for a better welcome present than getting to see Brandon Flowers live on my second night in the City. Okay, so it would have been better if he had been waiting for me backstage with a bunch of roses, but I’m not the kind of girl to go around breaking up marriages! I absolutely adore The Killers, more so to the point the band’s singer and frontman Brandon Flowers. I have enjoyed his solo offering Flamingo and was so upset to have missed his first solo show in London in September. So I was more than thrilled to have managed to snag a ticket to this performance at the Manhattan Centre’s Hammerstein Ballroom.
The stage was set up with a single dresser – like the one on the Las Vegas hotel room on the cover of Flamingo – and there were light panels at the back that played an important part in setting the tone for each of the songs off the singer’s album. When he sang Playing With Fire the lights lit up red, signalling both the romance and the caution behind the track. When he opened with On The Floor and then cried out: “New York, I’m coming for you!” before lunging into hit single Crossfire, they were a glorious yellow.
Before a number of the songs, he told the stories behind them – like about how he used to see the sign “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” travelling into the strip as a kid, and how he still loves living in Nevada. He also told the tale of people making the journey to Magdelena and the inspiration behind the song with the same title.
He even performed a few lines from Read My Mind, before Only The Young and also the Thin White Duke remix of Mr Brightside, which turned me and a group of strangers into instant friends, jumping up and down, singing along enthusiastically.
Thanks for the welcome Mr Flowers – oh, and “New York, I’m coming for you!”
