Brownies for Meryl Streep
It’s been a dream of mine to interview Meryl Streep over lunch one day. Preferably at a cute little bistro in the West Village. Well, a few weeks ago, I came close to this dream. Only it was in a hotel room with bright lights above us, for a few short minutes and Tommy Lee Jones was there too (hey, the more the merrier!) And by the time our interview rolled around, it was way past lunch-time. So I decided to bring the next best thing – brownies. I’d read in a few places that they are Meryl’s favourite, and what a coincidence, because, as we know, they are mine too!
The actress, who looks fantastic at 63, has played famous names like Margaret Thatcher (which won her Best Actress at this year’s Oscars) and the original celebrity chef, Julia Child, but in her latest movie, Hope Springs, she takes on the name of so-called ordinary woman, Kay, who’s trying to rekindle the passion in her marriage with Arnold (played ever so deftly by Mr Jones). Once a devoted couple, the pair’s spark has waned after decades of marriage. When Kay hears of a renowned couple’s specialist (Steve Carell) in the small town of Great Hope Springs, she attempts to persuade her skeptical husband to get on a plane for a week of marriage therapy and try out the hints and naughty tips he suggests to re-light their marriage fire.
Here’s a snippet of the interview where we talk about Hope Springs, as well as why she wore that rocking eco-friendly dress when she picked up her Oscar earlier this year. Oh, yeah, it’s also where she calls me her new best friend. Here’s hoping my bestie and I go for that lunch-date soon!
