Liam Neeson and his Battleship
Liam Neeson says he was thrown in the deep end with his latest movie, Battleship. The actor got the start date of filming wrong and was a day late getting to the set in Hawaii. Listening to him tell the story at Manhattan hotel made me feel a little better, as I thought about the couple of times I have gotten the date wrong for something. Mind you, it wasn’t for something in Hawaii, and it wasn’t starring alongside Taylor Kitsch!
In person, Liam Neeson is taller, even to someone whom practically everyone towers over. He is soft-spoken but thoughtful in his answers, and when he speaks the sound of his voice is just as rugged as he is. The Oscar-nominated actor can be funny, as seen in the snippet he did with Ricky Gervais, but he doesn’t see himself doing a comedy any time soon.
In Battleship he plays Admiral Shane in the movie based on the board-game, about a fleet of ships that is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to stop them from destroying the world. As for unknown origins, Liam says he not sure he believes in alien life.
The actor – who turns 60 in June – says he still boxes to keep fit. Aside from his physical gravitas, one of the things I’ve always admired about him, is the work he’s done as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and I wanted to know why he chose this particular charity.
I had to ask about working with Sharlto Copley in The A Team and he had nothing but nice things to say about the South African actor. As for the other hero film he has coming out, The Dark Knight Rises, Liam’s lips were sealed.
